The European Commission has published its 2025 report on intellectual property protection in third countries, identifying persistent global challenges in counterfeiting, piracy, and weak IP enforcement. While Colombia is not ranked among the EU’s priority countries, it remains under special monitoring for its management of Geographical Indications (GIs) under the EU-Andean Trade Agreement.
The report highlights that Colombia continues to be a major destination for counterfeit goods, affecting both European and local industries. Additionally, several infringements have been reported that risk undermining the protection of EU-recognized GIs in Colombia, alongside Peru and Ecuador.
The European Commission emphasized that deficiencies in IP enforcement harm fair competition, innovation, and consumer safety. It called on Colombia to strengthen its IP regulations and enforcement mechanisms to meet international standards.
