4 of july inventions

Fireworks, grills, cold drinks — July 4th comes with its own kind of rituals.

Independence Day in the U.S. is a celebration of history, but also of the many everyday inventions that turn summer into a shared experience: cookouts, sparklers, parades, pool days, and late-night fireworks. Many of these now-classic traditions are possible thanks to ideas that were patented decades ago — and some, still evolving.

Here are five patented inventions that helped shape how millions celebrate the 4th of July.

1. The grill

(Patents from 1897 and 1952)
Backyard barbecue wouldn’t be the same without two inventions: the modern charcoal briquette, patented by Ellsworth B.A. Zwoyer in the 1890s, and the Weber-style portable grill, invented by George Stephen in the 1950s. Working at Weber Brothers Metal Works, Stephen repurposed a marine buoy into the first modern grill — a simple, clever design that became a staple of summer gatherings.

Together, they redefined outdoor cooking.

2. Sparklers

(Patented 1934)
Patented in 1934, a handheld tradition that still lights up the night.
This classic firework became a staple of Independence Day across the country. It’s also one of the most reinvented, with safer designs and alternatives introduced over the years to reduce injury risk —especially among children.

3. Insulated beverage cooler

(Patented 1980)

Keeping drinks cold, one koozie at a time.
Originally patented as a “collapsible insulated jacket,” this invention became the go-to for keeping beverages cold during long outdoor gatherings. Small but essential —especially under the summer sun.

4. Fireworks display system

(Patented 1980)

Less smoke, more precision. This patent introduced a more controlled and environmentally conscious way to launch fireworks, allowing for safer and more accurate displays. It reflects how even the most traditional forms of celebration continue to evolve with innovation.
