In May 2024, Qatar became a new member of the Madrid System, which currently has 115 members.
Qatar becoming a member of the System reinforces it as an effective mechanism for the international protection of trademarks and that facilitates registration procedures. This is because the Madrid System allows that, through a single international application and the payment of a set of fees, trademark owners can access registrations in different countries.
Thus, as from August 3, 2024, trademark owners in Qatar will be able to use the Madrid System to apply for protection of their national registrations in up to 130 countries, by filing an international application; moreover, trademark owners in other States will be able to apply for the protection of their sign in Qatar, or if they already own an international registration, the geographical scope of the registration may be extended to include Qatar.
