The rise of e-commerce has brought to The US Customs and Border Protection some significant challenges nowadays. The CBP oversees the entry of dangerous materials, counterfeit or even smuggling products to the country. Their duty is to enhance the nation’s economic prosperity by enabling legitimate trade.
There is no doubt of the long lists of benefits that online purchase brings to the economy of countries. However, the proliferation of e-commerce increases, simultaneously, the number of de minimis shipments that crosses borders.

This facility promotes speed in e-commerce, but also presents challenges for customs authorities, such as CBP, by making it harder to detect counterfeit products that are shipped in small quantities.
Moreover, the extensive volume of parcels generated by e-commerce requires CBP to process and inspect a sheer number of shipments rapidly.
This is why the cooperation and information share of privates, authorities and IP rights holders is very important, because it can facilitate the identification of counterfeit products marketed online and prevent their entry into the country, which can be harmful for the economy and, also, public health.
