As of June 2, 2025, in Costa Rica, newly formed corporations (S.A.) and limited liability companies (S.R.L.) will no longer be allowed to have a corporate or trade name. They will be identified solely by their legal ID number, drastically transforming how businesses present themselves in the market.
With the legal name no longer serving as a distinctive element, trademarks and trade names—provided they are properly registered—become the only legal tools for building and protecting a commercial identity. This reform strengthens the role of Intellectual Property as a key mechanism for market competition, business recognition, and legal certainty in commercial activity.
