how ai is used in court

Recently the Superior Council of the Judicature published a survey titled “Experiences of AI in the Judicial Branch”. The study gathered the response of over 3,000 judicial functionaries and aimed to discover how AI is being used by said them. While the information collected demonstrates functionaries all over the country are taking advantage of this technology, there are several challenges that are to be tackled in the future.

The study indicates that out of 10 judicial functionaries, 3 are already using different AI services to gather general information and search for laws applicable to the matter they’re handling. Additionally, 53.6% work in courthouses, majorly in the biggest cities of the countries. Indeed, the use of said tools has proven to be beneficial for the development of the Colombian legal system.

Along with some of the problems that need to be resolved, is the need to increase the accessibility of AI tools for all judicial workers around the countries. The study showcased how a majority of the legal functionaries that use AI come from the biggest cities in the country, highlighting how the courthouses from the aislated regions of the country are at a disadvantage.

In the years to come, it is necessary to strengthen the access to digital plataforms and AI tools to all legal functionaries in the country while safeguarding the protection of the private information that beholds the judicial system.
