The Basque Consumer Institute imposed a fine of 30,000 euros on a cinema chain due to the controversial practice of prohibiting the entry of food purchased outside its facilities. This is considered an abusive clause that imposes limitations to the consumer in the acquisition of products without objective grounds.

This decision is added to the situation occurred in Peru since 2018, in which two cinema chains were forced by the consumer protection authority to allow spectators to enter theaters with food similar to those sold by these, as it imposes the consumer to use services that in principle he/she has not requested.

These cases could be a starting point for the authorities in different countries to adopt similar measures, eliminating the obligation imposed on consumers to purchase products marketed by the movie theater chains.
