The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) declared the protection of the designation of origin “Mangostino de Mariquita,” recognizing the quality, reputation, and distinctive characteristics of this fruit grown in northern Tolima. The decision highlights the agricultural value and importance of mangosteen produced in this region of Colombia.
The application was submitted by regional institutions like Chamber of Commerce of Honda, Guaduas and Northern Tolima, the Regional Center for Productivity and Technological Development of Tolima together with the municipality of San Sebastián de Mariquita. The designation identifies the fruit produced in several municipalities in northern Tolima, where factors such as climate, soil conditions, and the traditional knowledge of farmers contribute to a product with distinctive qualities.
This recognition protects the use of the name “Mangostino de Mariquita,” preventing its improper use by producers outside the recognized area. It also aims to strengthen the product’s market position, promote rural development, and highlight the importance of geographical origin in the quality of mangosteen.
