The Colombian Superintendency of Industry and Commerce issued Resolution 78798 of 2025, sanctioning Worldcoin Foundation and Tools for Humanity Corporation for violating Law 1581 of 2012 by collecting biometric data from Colombians without informed consent or adequate protection measures.
The investigation showed that the companies offered financial incentives in exchange for iris scans to create digital identifiers, without guaranteeing privacy or complying with the principles of legality and transparency. The SIC ordered the permanent closure of operations in the country, the deletion of all biometric information collected, and a ban on the processing of personal data in Colombia.
The SIC continues to reaffirm the importance of respecting the rights of data subjects and the responsibility of technology companies when processing sensitive information.
