The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC), together with personal data protection authorities from 60 countries, issued an international alert regarding the growing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital platforms to generate and disseminate non-consensual, defamatory, or potentially harmful intimate images of identifiable individuals. The statement follows the widespread circulation, in early 2026, of AI-manipulated images on social media, some containing non-consensual sexual content, which has reignited the global debate on privacy, consent, and the responsibility of digital platforms.
In this context, the SIC led an initiative within the International Enforcement Working Group (IEWG) of the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) to coordinate a joint statement reflecting the concerns of multiple personal data protection authorities. The document emphasizes that generative AI systems must be developed and used in accordance with applicable legal frameworks, particularly data protection and privacy regulations.
The signatory authorities also urged organizations that develop or use generative AI to implement measures to prevent the misuse of personal data, ensure meaningful transparency regarding the functioning and limits of AI systems, and establish effective mechanisms to remove harmful content. They also highlighted the need to adopt strengthened safeguards to protect children and adolescents. Through this call, the authorities reaffirm their commitment to coordinating regulatory, educational, and public policy actions to address the global risks associated with the abusive use of these technologies.
