Colombia’s consumer protection authority has launched an investigation into more than 40 providers of tourist housing services, following over 450 complaints received in 2024.
According to the agency, some providers allegedly submitted false information to the chambers of commerce, claiming their properties were not subject to horizontal property regimes or that tourist rentals were authorized in their building regulations—when that was not the case. Others were offering services without being registered in the National Tourism Registry.
The authority warned that these practices may compromise tourist safety and their right to clear, accurate, and complete information about the services they purchase. It emphasized the importance of verifying that tourist accommodations hold a valid registration and comply with legal requirements.
If violations are confirmed, providers could face fines of up to 2,000 minimum monthly wages, as well as other administrative orders to ensure compliance. In cases where irregularities persist, authorities may even order the suspension of these services. The goal is to protect consumers and promote a formal, safe, and responsible tourism sector across the country.
