Reform to Law 1581 of 2012

data protection framework modernized

The National Government announced a key reform to Law 1581 of 2012 at the 12th International Congress on Personal Data Protection. The initiative seeks to update the regime in light of the challenges of the digital age, such as artificial intelligence, cross-border information flows, and automated profiling.

Among the proposed changes are: broadening the scope of the law, including definitions specific to the digital economy, authorizing the processing of data for individuals over 14 years of age under strict conditions, expanding legal bases such as contract compliance, and strengthening oversight.

With this reform, Colombia seeks to consolidate its position as a regional benchmark in personal data protection, guaranteeing higher standards of security and transparency, strengthening public confidence in the use of information, and positioning the country at the forefront of international regulations in this area.
