Recently, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) ruled to continue with the assignment proceeding for \u201c.amazon\u201d. The\u00a0decision<\/a>\u00a0was issued in favor of the American e-commerce \u00a0company with the same name, despite objections and complaints filed by 8 South American countries.<\/p>\n

The domain application, filed by Amazon back in 2012, was objected to by the \u00a0Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization countries (Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Per\u00fa, Suriname and Venezuela), which considered the application as nothing but an attempt to monopolize an Amazonian geographical name.<\/p>\n

When the parties failed to reach an agreement, the ICANN declared there was a lack of public policy reasoning in order to stop processing the application. Hence, the board ruled to continue the proceeding, which includes a 30-day public commentary period before a final decision.
